  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 12

Description

These pumpkin bread recipes are the best ways to welcome the season! Try 10 of the top ways to make this fall favorite.

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup neutral oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon allspice, and ½ teaspoon nutmeg)
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ cups [210 g] all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¼ cup semi sweet or bittersweet chocolate chips (or mini, if desired)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9 x 5 inch aluminum bread pan, then add parchment paper cut so that it fits the width and extends on both long sides, to easily remove the bread once its baked.
  2. In a bowl, whisk the eggs. Then whisk in the pumpkin puree, sugar, oil, and vanilla.
  3. Whisk in the cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, and kosher salt. Then whisk in the baking powder and baking soda. Sprinkle in the flour, half at a time, and mix with a spatula until just combined and there are no more dry bits (don’t over-stir). Fold in 1 cup of the chocolate chips.
  4. Pour the batter into the bread pan and top with the remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips.
  5. Bake 60 to 65 minutes, until the top is set and a toothpick comes out with a few clinging crumbs. Allow to cool in the pan for 30 minutes, then run a knife around the edges and pull up on the parchment paper to remove the bread. Allow to cool to room temperature.
  6. Slice into pieces and serve. Stores for 4 days at room temperature wrapped in foil, 10 days in the refrigerator (bring to room temperature before serving), or freeze in slices for a few months.

Types of gin

The best gin for these gin cocktails? Here are some of our top choices and what we’d steer clear of:

  • Malfy gin has a great botanical flavor that blends well in cocktails.
  • Local gin can be great! In Indianapolis we buy from 8th Day Distillery, Hotel Tango, or Big Heart Gin.
  • Types of gin to avoid in our opinion are Tanqueray gin. which is very floral and can overpower mixed drinks. Opihr gin has very forward spices and can also taste unexpectedly strong.

Here are all the best mezcal cocktails to try! This Mexican spirit adds a smoky nuance to mixed drinks from the mule to the margarita.

Mezcal cocktails

Are you a mezcal fan? This bold, smoky Mexican liquor has cocktail connoisseurs everywhere swooning. The agave-based spirit is great when it’s balanced into a mixed drink, but take care: too much and it can overpower the flavors!

As cocktail experts with all the great cocktail recipes under our belt, we’ve tinkered with this smoky spirit to find our top mezcal cocktails to make at home. It’s stellar with lime and tequila as as a Mezcal Margarita, but it works just as well with ginger beer as a Mezcal Mule or tequila and bitters as the popular Mezcal Old Fashioned. Here are a few more great ideas on how to infuse mezcal into your favorite cocktails.

And now…the top mezcal cocktails to try!

More about mezcal

Want to grab a bottle for all these mezcal cocktails? Here’s a bit more about this smoky Mexican spirit and how it’s made:

  • Mezcal is a type of alcohol made from the agave plant (like tequila). Tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila. Only one type of agave plant (blue agave) makes tequila, but mezcal can be made from 11 different varieties of agave. Read more at Mezcal vs Tequila.
  • How is mezcal made? What gives mezcal its signature smoky flavor is cooking the agave in pits in the ground. It brings a depth and smokiness you don’t find in tequila.
  • How much does mezcal cost? A bottle of mezcal on average costs between $20 and $40, but high end brands can cost much more.

10 Fun Banana Bread Recipes

  • Author: Sonja Overhiser
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 1 hour
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 12

Description

Try this chocolate chip banana bread recipe: the best way to use the ripe fruit! It’s moist and sweet, flavored with brown butter.

Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups mashed very ripe bananas (3 medium bananas)
  • ½ cup butter
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (or flax eggs for vegan)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • ¾ cup semi sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter an 8 or 9-inch loaf pan.
  2. Brown the butter: Place the butter (sliced into pieces) in a skillet over medium heat. Heat for a few minutes until it melts, turns foamy, and then starts to become golden brown in color and smells nutty. Immediately remove from the heat and transfer to a bowl to cool for a minute before adding to the batter.
  3. Make the batter: Mash the bananas in the bottom of a large bowl, enough for 1 ¼ cup. Whisk in the sugar, egg, and vanilla extract. Add the browned butter once it’s ready.
  4. Add the baking soda, cinnamon, kosher salt, all-purpose flour, and whole wheat flour to another bowl and mix. Add to the bowl with the wet ingredients and stir together with a spoon. Gently fold in ½ cup chocolate chips.
  5. Bake: Pour the batter into the loaf pan and top with the remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips. Bake 55 to 60 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean (or the internal temperature is 200 degrees): the exact timing will depend on the size of the pan. Optional: add a sprinkle of flaky sea salt when you remove the bread from the oven.
  6. Cool: Cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Then run a knife around the edge and invert the loaf onto a cooling rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. Storage info: The bread lasts 4 to 5 days at room temperature wrapped in aluminum foil, refrigerated for 10 days, or frozen for 3 months (slice it into pieces and wrap it in plastic wrap then a freezer-safe bag or container).

20 Quick Sweet Bread Recipes

  • Author: Sonja Overhiser
  • Prep Time: 30 minutes
  • Cook Time: 1 hour
  • Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12

Description

This apple bread recipe is cozy and sweet, with a tender crumb and brown sugar cinnamon swirl. A great baking project for apple season!

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 2 cups sweet tart apples, peeled and diced into 1/4-inch pieces (about 1 pound)
  • 2 cups [280 g] all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup buttermilk*
  • 5 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup neutral oil (grapeseed, canola, or vegetable oil)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Mix the brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon in a small bowl and reserve it.
  3. Peel and chop the apples into 1/4-inch pieces. Butter a 9 x 5-inch aluminum loaf pan.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon. Make a well in the center.
  5. In a medium bowl, whisk the granulated sugar, buttermilk, melted butter, neutral oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients from the batter into the well in the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined and there are no longer streaks of flour.
  7. Add the apples and fold them in with a spatula, taking care not to overwork the batter.
  8. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with ½ of the brown sugar mixture. Add the remaining batter on top and sprinkle the remaining brown sugar mixture on top. Insert a butter knife into the batter and draw a few S shapes through the pan to swirl.
  9. Place the pan in the oven. Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few crumbs, rotating the pan halfway through baking, about 55 to 65 minutes. Allow to cool in the pan for 30 minutes.
  10. Run a knife around the edge and invert the loaf onto a cooling rack. Allow to cool fully to room temperature (about 1 hour) before slicing into pieces. This bread is best the day it’s made, but you can store refrigerated for up to 1 week: make sure to bring to room temperature before enjoying. Alternatively, store frozen for up to 3 months.

Notes

*Buttermilk is the magic ingredient which makes the most consistent texture and rise! Don’t be tempted to leave it out or use a buttermilk substitute. It’s worth it (we promise).
